So if a person was interested in an MX-5 Miata....a 2009 model...what are the must have for Solo II? As in packages, options, etc?

The MX-5 to have is the 07 and convert it to the MSR package. I don't think there are a lot of 09's that run in Solo (it is no longer Solo II). Although with the new STR class there might be some 09's coming out in that class. I am not for sure but I think you can still get crank windows and low option MX-5's.

Thanks. I guess the 08 and later cars are not the same as the 2007 model? I remember the dust up over the MSR package cars.

07 was the only year you could get the MSR package installed at the port which makes it compliant with stock. You can go to the dealer and buy the MSR package parts for the 08 and 09 but you can't get them installed at the port which makes them non-complaint with stock. It is a big argument with people as to if they should even allow an 07 MX-5 with the MSR package on it since very few of them were even made at the port.

If you can afford it, Disimo is selling his over on sccaforums.com. I would imagine it is well sorted and ready to go.

You don't have to look any further. This is what you were looking for...

This is what I REALLY want. I am researching these cars heavily. I am a little put off by all of the engine issues I am seeing on RX8club.com. No real explanation that I have seen, the engines are losing compression on a rotor and Mazda installs a reman under warranty. Would really like to know what the cause is....anybody know?

Looks like Mazda made a change to the 09's - they added a 3rd oil injector to each rotor housing. Will watch this over the next year with fingers crossed because not only is an RX8 is on my list of cars to own, I see the RX8 engine as a real possibility for my racecar. That is unless they don't fix this issue.

Of course, if all else fails.....I'll buy a MUSTANG!

True, but you asked for which options were the must have....you can't get those in an 09. But if cheaper is better....well then you're on the right track.

The initial purchase may be cheaper but after you factor in all of the tires, wheels, sway bars, shocks and then testing time you are still ahead with Darrin's car.

I appreciate all of that.....the original question was focused more on the desired options for a Miata that may see some solo action. A fully prepped solo car would be wasted on me....mostly because I don't have the talent to exploit it but also because I am really just looking for a toy.

Thanks for the responses and the info....

Just to restate what Brian did....that MSR trunk kit is something like $3500-4k, all by itself and that's uninstalled. Rodney or Craig can probably estimate that better than I, they have both have/had one.

But if you're wanting a new car so that you can use your S-plan, and it will just be an occasional autocrosser...then not much has changed since you've been in it full time. As base of a car as you can live with daily. I believe the 5sp car was preferred over the 6sp. And whatever package you can use the 17x7 wheels, legally...and you should be set.
